Understanding How the B02 Engine Works

Before adjusting the ignition system, it helps to understand how the engine operates.

Like most internal combustion engines, the B02 engine runs through a four-stroke cycle:

1. Intake Stroke – The engine draws in the air-fuel mixture.
2. Compression Stroke – The piston compresses the mixture inside the cylinder.
3. Power (Combustion) Stroke – The spark plug ignites the mixture to generate power.
4. Exhaust Stroke – The exhaust gases are expelled.

The most critical moment for ignition is when the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke, also known as Top Dead Center (TDC).

At this exact point, the spark plug should fire to ignite the compressed mixture and drive the piston downward, turning the flywheel.

Why Ignition Problems Happen

If your B02 engine fails to start or the spark plug does not fire, the issue is often caused by a shifted contact switch.

During handling or maintenance, the contact mechanism can sometimes be bumped or moved slightly. When this happens, the ignition system may no longer trigger correctly.

Fortunately, the fix is simple.

There are two main adjustments you can make:

• Adjusting the contact gap
• Adjusting the ignition timing position

Step 1: Adjust the Contact Gap

The first thing to check is the contact gap.

How to adjust it

Use a pair of tweezers to gently move the spring plate up or down.

This changes the distance between the contact points and can restore proper electrical contact.

Important tips

• Make very small adjustments
• Avoid using excessive force
• Recheck the spark after each adjustment

If the spark plug fires normally after this step, the problem is solved.

Step 2: Adjust the Ignition Timing

If the spark plug fires but the timing is incorrect, you need to adjust the push rod slider.

Adjustment steps

• Use a 1.5 mm screwdriver to loosen the slider screw.
• Move the slider slightly to adjust the timing.
• Move left → Ignition occurs earlier (advance timing)
• Move right → Ignition occurs later (retard timing)

Again, make small adjustments and test the ignition each time.

Final Check

Once the ignition occurs at the correct moment, the engine should ignite normally and be ready to start.

Proper ignition timing ensures:

• Smooth engine operation
• Reliable starting
• Better mechanical performance
